Indonesia raises eruption alert level of volcano Anak Krakatau

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency of Indonesia on December 27 raised the alert status of volcano Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands due to increased activity after its eruption last weekend triggered a tsunami that killed hundreds of people.

Hanoi (VNA) -
The Volcanology and Geological DisasterMitigation Agency of Indonesia on December 27 raised the alert status ofvolcano Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands dueto increased activity after its eruption last weekend triggered a tsunami thatkilled hundreds of people.

The agency said the alert status at Mt. Anak Krakatau was raised toLevel 3, one notch below the highest level, and recommended that locals andtourists not be allowed within a radius of 5 kilometers of the peak.

Meanwhile, AirNav Indonesia, the country's air navigation regulator,raised its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation in the vicinity of Mt. AnakKrakatau from orange to red, the top level, rerouting planes due to ash spewedby the volcano. 

AirNav Indonesia said inbound and outbound flights at Jakarta'sSukarno-Hatta International Airport will not be affected. 

The eruption on December 22 caused the southwestern flank of the volcano'scaldera to collapse, causing underwater landslides that triggered the tsunamithat hit coastal areas on the western tip of Java and the southern tip ofSumatra. This was the third tsunami that struck Indonesia over the past sixmonths.

The death toll reached 430 on December 26, with 159 others still missingand 1,495 injured. Almost 22,000 people have been displaced.-VNA
