Indonesia rushes to provide relief aid for South Sumatra flooding

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia's National DisasterMitigation Agency (BNPB) has said that it ensured sufficient relief aidlogistics for handling floods inundating many areas of South Sumatra province.

According to the BNPB, relief goods are stored at the SouthSumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) warehouse and will bedistributed to help the flood victims.

Earlier, the BNPB disbursed operational funds worth 1.85billion IDR (over 116,000 USD) and equipment for handling the floods that havehit South Sumatra over past two weeks, and displaced 19,890 households.

The operational funds and equipment weredistributed to regional disaster mitigation agencies (BPBD) at the provincialand district levels.

The catastrophe, caused by the recent intenseheavy rainfall, resulted in over 35,300 houses being flooded; 13 bridges beingdamaged and collapsed; 289 houses incurring moderate to serious damage; and twoothers being swept away.

The flooding also submerged a 126.65-km-longroad; 8,70 ha of palm and rubber plantations, and nearly 1,180 ha of rice fields, and inundated 211 public facilities.
