Jakarta (VNA) 𒈔- Indonesian Migrant Workers' Protection Minister Abdul Kadir Karding has expressed his commitment to improving the capacity of Indonesian migrant workers to prevent them from working illegally and being exploited.
He emphasised the need to enhance the capabilities of migrant workers. To this end, Indonesian authorities will establish standardised frameworks for training programmes, including professional skills, work ethics, legal knowledge, and safety measures for candidates before they participate in overseas labour programmes.
He revealed that over 5 million Indonesians are currently working abroad illegally, accounting for nearly 90% of workers registered through the Ministry of Manpower’s labour export programme.
According to him, the lack of necessary skills and knowledge is the primary reason many Indonesian workers become vulnerable to exploitation overseas. Most undocumented workers lack sufficient information and essential work skills before departing.
Additionally, he highlighted that improving foreign language proficiency is a critical factor in helping Indonesian workers adapt more effectively to international work environments. Countries such as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Korea, and China’s Hong Kong are the primary destinations for Indonesian migrant workers.
