Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has outlined an ambitious target toachieve a milestone in the power sector with its electrification ratio of 100percent by 2020.

According to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan, theelectrification ratio reached 98.9 percent by August, and with a monthlyincrease of around 0.1 percent, the target of 100 percent can be achieved by2020.

The minister pointed to the fact that some 500,000 households applied for newpower connections annually.

The Energy and Mineral ResourcesMinistry’s data showed that over the past eight years, electrification ratio hasincreased from 67.2 percent to 98.05 percent, with electricity still generatedmainly from fossil energy.

Last year, power supply in the country reached 62,600 MW, and electricityconsumption was recorded at more than 1,000 kWh per person.

Two months ago, the government decided to invest some 6.5 trillion IDR (nearly464.3 billion USD) in the state-owned power utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara(PLN) to improve its management capacity.

The nation is also working to develop renewable energy while providingelectricity and fuel oil for local residents at reasonable prices./.
