Jakarta (VNA) - Three people, including two police officers, were killed inIndonesia's eastern-most province of Papua on June 27 when they werecarrying ballot boxes after the country’s local elections on the same day.

Thelocal authority said unknown gunmen attacked aspeedboat, where the victims were on board when they were on duty to guard ballotboxes.

Director of Papua’s police agency Gen. Boy RafliAmar said the group of 10 police officers was on their way from the Dow pollingstation to Torere to transport boxes full of filled-out ballots.

This was the third attacks in Papua aiming at the armed force. On June25, an aircraft carrying 15 policemen in charge of pre-election securitysurveillance in Nduga district was fired on by unidentified assailants.

Indonesia had been on high alert for violence, as the country conducted electionsfor 171 city mayors, regents, and provincial governors on June 27.

Separatists in Papua had stepped up rallies, riots and violent attacks toundermine the elections.-VNA
