Indonesian sports minister resigns over corruption allegation

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said on September 19 that Minister of Youth and Sports Imam Nahrawi has submitted his resignation after the anti-corruption watchdog KPK named him a suspect in a bribery case.

Hanoi (VNA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodosaid on September 19 that Minister of Youth and Sports Imam Nahrawi has submittedhis resignation after the anti-corruption watchdog KPK named him a suspect in abribery case.

Widodo told the press that the government will decide laterwhether to replace Nahrawi or have an interim minister. It was the secondcabinet minister involved in the graft case.

Earlier on September 18, KPK announced that Nahrawi and anassistant at the ministry are relatedto a grant the Ministry of Youth and Sports had given to the NationalSports Committee (KONI).

Nahrawi allegedly received a 26.5 billion rupiah (1.88million USD) commitment fee in disbursement of the grant proposed by KONI.

The money had allegedly been used for his personal usethrough his personal assistant.

Representatives of the KONI are accused of giving some ofthe money to Nahrawi through his assistant on five occasions.

The case surfaced after the KPK launched a campaign inDecember 2018, confiscating 7.4 billion rupiah.

Former Minister of Social Affairs Idrus Marham was sentencedto three years in jail in April for bribery In relation to the case,.

The KPK has prosecuted hundreds of politicians, officials, andbusinessmen since its formation in 2002, becoming one of the country's mostrespected agencies./.
