Initiative to help Quang Ngai build carbon-free islands

An initiative will be carried out in Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province, so as to help islands in the central locality to be free of carbon.

Quang Ngai (VNA) – An initiativewill be carried out in Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province, so as tohelp islands in the central locality to be free of carbon.

A memorandum of understanding on the initiativewas signed on November 14 by the Quang Ngai People’s Committee, three companiesof the Republic of Korea (SK Innovation, Doosan Heavy Industries and Ingine),and Vingroup of Vietnam.

In the initial stage, Quang Ngai will work withthe Vietnamese and RoK businesses to provide environmentally friendlytechnologies the firms are owning for An Binh Island, which has 500 householdsand an area of about 69ha. By doing so, they hope to build An Binh into acarbon free island, thus helping to improve local living standards and protectthe environment.

SK Innovation is set to consider the applicationof plastics recycling technologies to help deal with plastic waste issues onVietnamese islands. It will supply LED lamps to replace incandescentlight bulbs and halogen lamps at agencies and organisations’ buildings andon streets, along with solar cookers.

Meanwhile, Doosan Heavy Industries will continuemaintaining and installing more desalination systems on An Binh to supply cleanwater for islanders.

Ingine plans to install a wave power system witha capacity of 50 – 100kW on the island in 2020 to help reduce costs and solveenvironmental issues created by the use of diesel generators.

Additionally, Vingroup will present 20 electricmotorbikes to An Binh as gifts to help the island reduce air pollution.

At the signing ceremony, Vice Chairman of theQuang Ngai provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Tang Binh said Ly Son islanddistrict holds huge potential for developing sea-based economy and tourism, butit is facing a number of challenges. 

He expressed his hope that the carbon-freeisland initiative will help boost local socio-economic development, reducepollution and ensure energy security towards sustainable development in thedistrict.

Jee Dong Seob, head of the Double Bottom Line ofSK Innovation, said he expects the initiative will prove successful on An BinhIsland and become a model to be expanded in Quang Ngai province./.

🍰 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

🍰 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
