Intense volcanic activity in the Philippines

The Philippines’ volcano Mayon in the eastern province of Albay recorded intense activity, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands of residents in fear of an eruption on September 17.

Accordingto the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS),the volcano caused 38 earthquakes and 277 rock avalanches during a24-hour period.

PHIVOLCS experts attributed this to the rising of eruptible magma.

Since September 12, Mayon has continued to emit an average of457tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day, peaking at 2,360 tonnes onSeptember 6.

On September 15, Philippine authoritiesdeclared level 3 alert on the country’s five-level warning scale, whichmeans the volcano may erupt in the next few weeks.

Leaders of the local security force said evacuations would take threedays, with approximately 8,000 out of 50,000 local residents having toleave their homes.

The 2,640m-high Mayon volcanolies 330km northwest of Manila . This dangerous area is also anattractive tourist destination for the Philippines . Last May, fourinternational tourists and a tour guide lost their lives during aneruption.-VNA
