The Ministry of Transport and Kien Giang province have reached agreementon development of an international-standard seaport on Phu Quoc Islandto accommodate huge cruise ships at a cost of 1.25 trillion VND (59million USD), the Saigon Times Daily reported.

Five locationshave been proposed for the planned seaport, namely An Thoi, Duong To,Duong Dong, Mui Dat Do and Vinh Dam, heard a meeting betweenrepresentatives of the transport ministry and Kien Giang province lastweek.

However, after taking careful consideration, the ministryand the local government agreed the seaport would go up near Duong Dongtown to make it easy for the province to attract investors to theproject and international travelers.

According to a blueprint ofPortcoast Consultant Corporation (Portcoast), the pier of the seaportwould be 400 metres long and 19 metres wide. In addition, a1,020-metre-long bridge would be built to connect the pier with theshore.

Portcoast suggested setting up a breakwater to enablevessels to dock at the pier even in storms, and building a two-level atthe seaport.

In addition to cruise ships that can carry 5,000-6,000 passengers each, the seaport is expected to handle container vessels.

Theconsultant proposed dividing the project into two phases with around1.1 trillion VND planned for the first phase including 537 billion VNDfor the breakwater.

Kien Giang province intended to call forinvestors to develop the seaport under a public-private partnership(PPP) format with Vingroup already invited to participate in theproject.

Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Cong urged theVietnam Maritime Administration to work with Portcoast and Vingroup overa feasible financing plan for the project and report it to thetransport ministry by October 20.

Phu Quoc Island is located nearthe Singapore – Thailand – Vietnam – Northeast Asia tourism route, usedby 19 marine transport companies.

The port would help developthe tourism industry on the island. It is expected that the number oftourists to Phu Quoc by sea will increase annually from 105,000 to190,000 until 2020, and to 550,000 visitors by 2030.-VNA
