Jakarta (VNA) - Variousinternational organizations have committed to helping Indonesia in conserving1.3 million hectares of North Kalimantan’s conservation forest, which is alsoknown as the "Heart of Borneo".
NorthKalimantan Governor Irianto Lambrie said that in 2018, the province willreceive 400,000 USD for forest conservation, including to conduct activities toempower local people living in the forest.
The KayanMentarang National Park, covering an area of 1,360,500 hectares, is the largestand remaining area of primary and old secondary forest in Kalimantan andSoutheast Asia.
This national park is home to rare flora andfauna that need protection, as well as various ecosystem types, ranging fromlowland rainforests to mossy forests in high mountains.
At thisnational park, some 20,000-25,000 people from the Dayak ethnic groups livearound the Kenyah, Punan, Lun Daye, and Lun Bawang areas. They have culturalknowledge and wisdom that are in line with forest conservation efforts andapparent from their preservation of biodiversity in the forest.
NorthKalimantan has been a member of the GCF Task Force on Climate and Forests sinceAugust 29, 2016, with the aim of addressing climate change. Other members ofthe Task Force are Aceh, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan,Papua, and West Papua.
The GCF 2018identified 30 world projects under the United Nations Development Program(UNDP) to prevent forest damage.-VNA
