Int’l yacht race helps promote Indonesia’s maritime economy

Jakarta (VNA) - Sail Moyo Tambora, as part of Indonesia Sail 2018, was launched in Sumsbawaof Nusa Tenggara islands by the Indonesian Ministries of Transport andInformation Technology in collaboration with authorities of West Nusa Tenggara provinceon September 9.

Over 100 yachts from 19 countries worldwide areattending the annual event, which aims to promote Indonesia’s localities withpotential for maritime economic development, thus benefiting coastal and islandcommunities, especially in tourism development.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs LuhutBinsar Panjaitan said this is a strategic activity to help coastal localities developmaritime infrastructure, thus promoting their tourism potential.

The Indonesian Government has invested inbuilding airports, ports, wharfs and roads in areas adjacent to Sumbawa, especiallyin Moyo and Tambora islands, aiming to attracting more tourists to the areas.

In the framework of the event, many otheractivities are being organised such as tours to Tambora volcano, a maritimeexhibition with 84 booths from 31 agencies, and parachute and art performanceprogrammes.

Indonesia Sail 2018 was first organised inManado in 2009. This year’s event is hoped to turn Mandalika of West NusaTenggara into one of the ten tourist destinations in Indonesia’s nationaltourism development strategy.

Authorities of West Nusa Tenggara expect activitiesduring the event will help the province attract 4 million visitors in 2018.

Last year, it welcomed 3 million domestic and foreign holidaymakers.-VNA
