Irish President hails Vietnam's growing regional, global role, credibility

Irish President Michael D. Higgins has commended Vietnam on its increasingly prominent role and prestige in the region and on the global stage, highlighting the country's significant contributions to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment regionally as well as the cohesion and centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on numerous critical issues.

Dublin (VNA) – Irish President Michael D. Higgins has commended Vietnam on its increasingly prominent role and prestige in the region and on the global stage, highlighting the country's significant contributions to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment regionally as well as the cohesion and centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on numerous critical issues.

Higgins made his remarks while receiving Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK and Ireland Do Minh Hung, who came to present his letter of credence in Dublin on September 10.

At the reception, the Irish leader expressed his sympathy for the significant losses suffered by the people of Vietnam due to the severe impact of Typhoon Yagi. He extended his wishes for the Vietnamese Government and people to remain united, resilient, and swiftly overcome this challenging period.

Higgins said he is confident that relations between Vietnam and Ireland will continue to flourish in the years to come, particularly in areas such as education, agriculture, trade, climate change mitigation, and people-to-people exchanges. He noted that both countries have considerable potential to further enhance and develop cooperation in bilateral relations and on international forums.

The Vietnamese ambassador expressed his appreciation for the tangible support that the Irish Government and people have provided to Vietnam in poverty eradication and sustainable development through various development aid programmes. Hung wished both sides will continue strengthening collaboration in multiple areas, with a focus on education, research, science and technology, farming, cultural exchange, and fostering mutual understanding and goodwill between the two peoples.
