Japan ready to host CPTPP chief negotiators' meeting

Hanoi (VNA) - Japan is willing to host ameeting of chief negotiators of the newly-signed Comprehensive and ProgressiveAgreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in June or July, said a seniorJapanese official in charge of the pact.

Minister in charge of the CPTPP Toshimitsu Motegi saidthe meeting will confirm the progress in each member country's ratification inorder to bring the pact into force while discussing responses to other nationsand regions interested in joining the framework.

Japan and the 10 other member countries aim to put thepact into force by the end of this year.

The 11 CPTPP economies with a combined population ofabout 500 million make up about 13 percent of the global GDP. The agreementwill enter into force 60 days after it is fully ratified by six of the 11members.

Minister Motegi said he believes brining the pact intoeffect is a top priority of the 11 members, while emphasising the possibilityof additional partners joining the agreement.

The 11 members of the CPTPP, officially inked in Chileon March 8, 2018, are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia,Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

Some other countries such as the Republic of Korea and Thailand have reportedlyshown interest in joining the pact.-VNA
