Japanese investment in Cambodia drops despite trade spike

Japanese investment inCambodia reduced to 47.9 million USD in 2014 from 48.9 million USD inthe previous year, due to the hike of the minimum wage in Cambodia andrising electricity prices across Southeast Asia .

Cambodia ’s exports to Japan grew 33 percent year-on-year to 771million USD, while Cambodia imported 254 million USD worth of goodsfrom the market last year.

Textiles and garments are expected to dominate the exports in the next two years.

Cambodian economist Srey Chanthy was optimistic about the future ofJapanese investment in the country, which he said will continue to risein tandem with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC),of which Cambodia is to be a member./.
