Japanese NGO helps poor households improve livelihood

Seed to Table, a Japanese non-governmental organization, reviewed the one-year implementation of its project on improving livelihoods for poor households in the southern province of Ben Tre on July 19.
Seed to Table, a Japanese non-governmental organization, reviewed theone-year implementation of its project on improving livelihoods for poorhouseholds in the southern province of Ben Tre on July 19.

The 45,000 USD project, financed by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs,was executed in Binh Dai district’s five communes, namely Chau Hung,Thanh Phuoc, Long Hoa, Phu Long and Dai Hoa Loc, with the involvement of569 poor households.

The project aims to increaseparticipating poor households’ cash income by applying a method ofbreeding ducks at home without the need of large investment capital.

As a partner of Seed to Table, the Ben Tre agricultural andfishery promotion centre has offered technical aid to enable localpoor households to feed ducks at home and in rice fields by taking fulladvantage of available chicken-feed.

Each poor household was provided with 25 ducks for home breeding and another 25 for rice-duck farming .
Chief Representative of Seed to Table in Vietnam Ino Mayu said theproject will run until 2015 and will change from duck to cow breeding.

In addition, the project will implement a model of growing freshvegetables for restaurants and hotels and provide market and priceinformation for poor households, Mayu added.-VNA
