Meas Muth and Im Chaem, both in their seventies, were charged inabsentia by international co-investigating Judge Mark Hampton over theirinvolvement with the regime that led to the deaths of almost twomillion Cambodians in the 1970s.

Thecourt has alleged that Meas Muth, an ex-navy commander, sent captives toa torture centre whilst Im Cheam, a female former district official,ran a forced labour camp.

The two have been accused of crimes against humanity and homicide.

Decisions on whether these cases will end up with indictments ordismissals are expected next year, according to court spokesman LarsOlsen.

Since the tribunal was established in 2006,it sentenced Kaing Guek Eav, former chief at Tuol Sleng prison, to lifeimprisonment in 2010.

Most recently, in August2014, Nuon Chea, 88, and Khieu Samphan, 83, received life sentences forcrimes against humanity. The pair have since appealed the verdict.Currently, they are undergoing a second trial focusing on the killing ofethnic Vietnamese and Muslim minorities, forced marriage, and rape.-VNA
