Laos steps up efforts against dengue fever

– Lao Minister of Health Bounkong Syhavong hasstressed the need to mobilise more health workers to serve the treatment ofdengue fever patients given the fact that Laos is facing the risk of denguefever outbreaks.

During his recent fact-finding trip tohospitals, the minister advised health workers to educate individuals andcommunities so that they understand the danger of the disease and take activesteps to prevent it.

The public should make sure that all stagnant water is removed in order toprevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding, Syhavong was cited byVientiane Times as saying.

The Lao Ministry of Health reported that as of mid-July, 16,000 people in Laoshad been diagnosed with dengue fever and 34 died of the disease.

As many as 5,584 dengue fever cases werereported in Laos in 2017, with 14 deaths. 

According to the World Health Organisation,dengue is one of the fastest emerging infections and is currently the mostrapidly spreading viral disease known. There is also no specific treatment orvaccine available to prevent deaths.-VNA
