Laos works closely with UNICEF to protect children’s rights

Vientiane (VNA) - Ambassador Anouparb Vongnorkeo, Permanent Representative of Laos to the United Nations (UN), has reaffirmed that Laos will continue to partner with he UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) to advance child well-being.
Anouparb made the statement while addressing the first regular session of the UNICEF Executive Board in 2025 held in New York, the US, from February 4 to 7.
Laos has officially assumed its role as a member of the UNICEF Executive Board for the 2025–2027 term, following its election by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in April 2024. This marks the second time the Southeast Asian nation has held a seat on the board, with its first tenure taking place from 2001 to 2003.
At the session, Anouparb emphasised the partnership between UNICEF and the Lao government in ensuring and promoting children's rights and well-being, while mentioning challenges ahead, particularly amid climate change and global economic uncertainties.
He called on the global community to sustain and expand investments in child-centred initiatives to ensure that every child, regardless of circumstance, has the opportunity to thrive.
ꦗ The UNICEF Executive Board consists of 36 UN member states elected by ECOSOC for a three-year term. It is responsible for intergovernmental oversight of UNICEF's activities, approving policies, country programmes, and budgets. The board also provides guidance on new initiatives in line with the overall policy direction of the UN General Assembly and ECOSOC./.
