Hanoi (VNA) – A court of appeal in Putrajaya,Malaysia, on December 8 upheld former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s 12imprisonment sentence over his scandal at 1MalaysiaDevelopment Berhad sovereign wealth fund that contributed to hisgovernment’s downfall in 2018.

Atthe court, judge Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil dismissed Najib’s appeal and affirmed theHigh Court conviction on all seven charges.

Atthe first trial in 2020, the former PM and his cronies were accused of stealing billions of dollars from the investment vehicle andspending it on everything from high-end real estate to pricey art. Asmany as 42 million ringgit (9.9 million USD) from a former 1MDB unit weretransferred to Najib's bank accounts.

♛ The former leader is now expected to lodge a last-ditchchallenge at Malaysia's top court, and could remain free on bail until thatappeal wraps up./.
