Malaysia arrests seven suspects for links to IS

Malaysia police said on March 13 they arrested 7 people for suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) militant group during a counter-terrorism operation from March 8-12 in Sabah and Selangor states.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia police said onMarch 13 they arrested seven people for suspected links to the Islamic State(IS) militant group during a counter-terrorism operation from March 8-12 inSabah and Selangor states.

Malaysian Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakarsaid the suspects include two Malaysians and five Filipinos.

Two of the Philippine suspects, aged 27 and 18, weredetained on suspicion of raising funds for two Malaysians, Mahmud Ahmad andMohamad Joraimee, who joined up with IS in the southern Philippines in 2014.

The three other Philippine suspects were arrested forsmuggling IS members from Indonesia into the southern Philippines and forplanning to travel to Syria to join IS.

Two Malaysians include an female immigration officer,who was allegedly assisted IS militants from Malaysia and Indonesia in enteringinto the southern Philippines, while the other was deported back to Malaysiaafter he was arrested by Turkish authorities on January 16 for trying to enterSyria to join IS.

Malaysiahas been on high alert since armed gunmen linked to the IS launched multiple attacksin Jakarta, the capital of neighbouring Indonesia, in January 2016. Thecountry’s authorities arrested more than 250 people between 2013 and 2016 oversuspected militant activities linked to IS.-VNA
