Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia was one of the 13 nations officially added to BRICS as a partner country on October 24.

In a statement delivered at the Malaysian parliament, Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said that joining the bloc will help the country enjoy more and better trade opportunities.

He stated that Malaysia is committed to furthering the Global South agenda to boost South-South cooperation and collaboration, especially during Malaysia’s tenure as the chair of ASEAN next year.

The minister said joining the group will enhance Malaysia’s visibility in the international arena, especially in handling pressing global challenges.

Malaysia's desire to join BRICS represents its effort to uphold policies and identity as an independent and neutral country, striking a balance with great powers and opening up new business and investment opportunities.

💯 The Malaysian government is still committed to strengthening ties with crucial trade partners such as the US and the European Union, with respective two-way trade of 250.25 billion ringgit (57.59 billion USD) and 206.69 billion ringgit in 2023./.
