Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Malaysia and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing regional decarbonisation and sustainable growth under the Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) initiative.

The pledge was made during the courtesy call by former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on May 6, held in conjunction with Kishida’s two-day working visit to Malaysia to attend the AZEC summit in the capital.

Kishida, who is also the supreme adviser to the Parliamentary Association of AZEC, said they exchanged views on decarbonisation, regional cooperation and global economic challenges.

Japan wants to work with Malaysia to advance AZEC, he said, appreciating Anwar’s proactive and forward-looking approach.

He said that Japan formed a parliamentary league dedicated to AZEC, which will work alongside partner countries, businesses and other stakeholders to promote the initiative.

At the event, both sides proposed establishing a new cooperation centre in Malaysia focusing on the areas of technology, energy, and sustainable development.

Anwar welcomed Japan’s research and technical support for Malaysia through initiatives like AZEC, helping the country push ahead its National Energy Transition Roadmap. Japan, boasting strengths in renewable energy, bioenergy, and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), has been an important strategic partner of Malaysia in its efforts to become a regional hub for innovation and sustainable development.

♎ AZEC is a Japan-led initiative launched in 2022 to promote decarbonisation across Asia through regional collaboration, technology transfer and public-private partnerships. It aims to strike a balance between carbon neutrality and economic growth, particularly in emerging economies./.
