Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Inspector General of Royal Malaysia PoliceMohamad Fuzi Harun has warned that commercial crime has shown a worrying trendin the country over the past four years.

“Megatrends” involving digitaltechnology, aided by social media access in a global, borderless world, havecontributed greatly to various commercial crime trends, particularly in thecyber world, Harun was quoted by Malaysia’s New Straits Times as saying onFebruary 26.

Citing police statistics, Harunstated that the number of commercial crime cases increased from 19,509 in 2015to 26,277 in 2016 and 28,217 last year.

Since the beginning of this year, the police have received 2,233 reports of commercial crime, he added.

Cheating cases are difficult tobreak, but the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) will takedrastic measures to increase the percentage of cases taken to court, hestressed.

Additionally, Harun reported thatpolice are working closely with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to handle a newtrend in cheating cases involving crypto-currency Bitcoin.

In 2014, BNM issued a statementthat Bitcoin trading was not acknowledged as legal in Malaysia. Last year, however, the central bank proposed that guidelines be produced forcrypto-currency focusing on money laundering and financial support forterrorist activities.

Besides Bitcoin, other forms ofcrypto-currency are Ethereum, Zcash, Dash, Tezos, Ripple dan Monero.-VNA
