Malaysia to set up special court to address corruption cases

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said onMarch 19 that a special court will be set up to address promptly corruption-relatedcases in Southeast Asian nation.
The special court will focus on dealing with corruption cases in line with theNational Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP), the PM said.
He said the reason why the government is doing this is because it was foundthat corruption trials are currently “regarded as ordinary trials”, without anypriority.
The establishment of the special court will require some laws as it is supposedto change the nature of the courts, he said.
The judges for the special court must be appointed by the Yang di-PertuanAgong, while the power of prosecution will come from the Attorney-General, headded. - VNA
