— Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad called for areview of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-PacificPartnership (CPTPP), saying smaller economies like Malaysia are at adisadvantage under its current terms.

In aninterview with Japan's Nikkei published on June 9, Mahathir said the trade pactshould take into consideration development levels of various countries.

Weakereconomies must be given a chance to protect their products, he added.

Mahathir didnot reject the significance of agreements like the CPTPP and did not saywhether he would consider withdrawing from the trade pact, Nikkei reported.

The PM saidhis government "must review all agreements" the country got involvedunder the previous administration, including infrastructure, trade and securitypacts.

The92-year-old PM took office last month, committing to reducing national debt andreviewing big projects approved by his predecessor.-VNA
