Hanoi (VNA) – The 16th Hanoi OpenMathematics Competition (HOMC) opened in the capital city with a ceremony onApril 3, with foreign students joining for the second time.
This year, the three-day competition has attractedmore than 600 students from 14 countries and territories, including Indonesia,Malaysia, China, Nepal, the Philippines, Hungary, Iran, Myanmar, Poland, Spain,Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and host Vietnam.
The contestants will compete in twocategories of juniors (for eighth and ninth graders) and seniors (for 10thgraders). English is the official language of the contest.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Directorof the municipal Department of Education and Training Chu Xuan Dung said the eventaims to encourage learning amongst Vietnamese students, especially inmathematics, as well as to discover new maths talents from Vietnam and around theworld.
Dr Eduardo O. Dela Cruz Jr, Vice Presidentof the Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines, affirmed that the friendshipsbetween participating students and teachers are expected to deepen throughexchange activities, discussions, and cultural experiences during thecompetition in Hanoi.

Vietnamese students finished third with two silver and seven bronze medals in the final of the World Mathematics Olympiad (WMO) held in Tianjin, China from August 11-12.
Nearly 500 students will compete at the 15th Hanoi Open Mathematics Competition (HOMC) from March 26 to 30, with foreign contestants joining for the first time.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
