Mauritius interested in deepening cooperation with Vietnam

The President of Mauritius praised Vietnam’s expertise in aquaculture and fishery exports, suggesting the two countries explore ways to enhance cooperation by sharing experiences and successful practices in this field.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador Tran Thi Thu Thin on June 2 presented her credentials to President of Mauritius Dharambeer Gokhool, who affirmed that Mauritius always highly values and wishes to deepen its traditional cooperation and friendship with Vietnam.

President Gokhool expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic development and comprehensive international integration achievements in recent years. He expressed his hope that bilateral cooperation will make new and substantive progress, particularly in areas such as economy, trade, investment, tourism, education, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.

Praising Vietnam’s expertise in aquaculture and fishery exports, he suggested that the two countries explore ways to enhance cooperation by sharing experiences and successful practices in this field.

He also emphasised Mauritius’ strategic geographical location, political stability, attractive financial and tax policies for foreign investors, and its network of double taxation avoidance agreements and free trade agreements with various countries and regions. That enables the country to serve as a strategic gateway for Vietnamese enterprises to enter Africa, he stated

Highlighting the positive outcomes of bilateral cooperation and mutual support at international forums, President Gokhool thanked Vietnam for consistently backing Mauritius’s legal and diplomatic efforts regarding sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago. He also mentioned that Mauritius is considering supporting Vietnam’s candidacy for a judge position at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).

President Gokhool said he hopes Ambassador Thin will actively engage with Mauritian authorities to implement concrete initiatives that contribute positively to the development of bilateral relations.

The diplomat conveyed warm regards and congratulations from President Luong Cuong to President Gokhool on his inauguration and extended the Vietnamese leader’s invitation to him to visit Vietnam in the near future.

She also expressed her hope that the Mauritian President and Government will continue to support the Vietnamese community living, studying, and working in Mauritius, helping to strengthen the friendship between the two peoples.

The same day, the Vietnamese Ambassador also met with Mauritius’s Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection John Michael Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen, and Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning Jyoti Jeetun. Both sides agreed to advance concrete steps for businesses to explore each other's markets and seek investment opportunities, aiming to boost trade and financial services cooperation.

Mauritius, an island nation in the southern Indian Ocean, is regarded as a financial hub for Sub-Saharan Africa, with strengths in financial services and tourism. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mauritius’s GDP is around 15.5 billion USD, with per capita income exceeding 12,300 USD.

🌠 Vietnam and Mauritius, establishing diplomatic relations in 1994, have considerable potential for cooperation though bilateral trade remains modest. In recent years, Vietnam’s exports to Mauritius topped 100 million USD while imports stood at around 20 million USD./.
