Mekong-Lancang countries meet to discuss sustainable development

The meeting focused onestablishing dialogue and cooperation mechanisms for the sub-regionincluding goals, orientations and priority fields.

Liu Zhenmin, Chinese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, said thatthe establishment of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms is designed tomaintain peace, stability, development and prosperity in the sub-region.

He said the meeting will open up dialogue andcooperation processes along the river and urged the participatingcountries to take advantage of their geography and strengthen securityand political cooperation for stability in the sub-region and deepenedand practical cooperation.

China proposedholding a conference of foreign ministers and a senior official meetingon dialogue and cooperation along the Mekong-Lancang River on thesidelines of the ASEAN-China summit meeting in Myanmar last year.

The Mekong-Lancang, the world’s 12th longest river, runs through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.-VNA
