More foreign leaders extend condolences over former State President’s passing
More foreign leaders have sent messages and letters of condolences to Vietnam, following the death of former Politburo member and former State President Tran Duc Luong on May 20.

Hanoi (VNA) -🎃 Leaders of Thailand, Brunei, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Republic of Korea (RoK), Mongolia, and Peru have sent messages and letters of condolences to Vietnam, following the death of former Politburo member and former State President Tran Duc Luong on May 20.
In their messages of condolence, King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra of Thailand highly valued the great contributions of the former Vietnamese State leader to Vietnam’s national construction and development as well as to strengthening the Vietnam-Thailand relationship, stressing that the state visit to Thailand in 1998 by Luong laid a foundation and paved the way for the two countries to upgrade their relationship to the current Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
In a message of condolences to Vietnamese leaders and the bereaved family, Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah expressed his deep respect for the late leader, calling him a close friend and recalling fond memories of their meetings, especially during mutual state visits. He highly evaluated the former leader’s significant contributions to strengthening Vietnam–Brunei relations and his dedication to improving the lives of the Vietnamese people and promoting the country’s prosperity and development.
Meanwhile, in its message, the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK praised Luong’s contributions to Vietnam’s socialist building and to strengthening the DPRK–Vietnam relations.
In his condolence message, Acting President, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education of the RoK Lee Ju-ho emphasised that during his tenure, Luong laid a strong foundation for Vietnam’s development and made great contributions to advancing the RoK – Vietnam relations, including the elevation of the bilateral ties to a comprehensive partnership in the 21st century.
Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh also described the former Vietnamese leader as an outstanding leader who made major contributions to Vietnam’s socio-economic development. He recalled Luong’s state visit to Mongolia in 2000, during which the late President signed a new agreement on friendship and cooperation between the two nations, marking a significant step forward in lifting the traditional friendship to a new height.
Meanwhile, President Alberto Moreno Rojas and General Secretary Manuel Guerra Velasquez of the Communist Party of Peru – Red Fatherland praised Luong for his dedication and integrity throughout various leadership roles./.
In deep mourning, participants and members of the bereaved family observed a minute of silence to bid farewell to the former President as he was laid to rest in his final resting place.
Representatives of many Asian countries and international friends have shown their respects for former President Tran Duc Luong's contributions to Vietnam's development, relations with their countries, and integration into the region.
Representatives of authorities and international diplomatic corps in Cuba, the US, and Canada have visited the Vietnamese embassies there to pay homage to former President of Vietnam Tran Duc Luong.
The trip will be made at the invitations of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and WEF President and CEO Børge Brende, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Long spoke highly of the dynamic, positive, and comprehensive development of Vietnam – Russia relations in recent years. He affirmed that the Vietnamese Party and State place great importance on further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia in a substantive and effective manner, in line with the development needs of both nations.
At the conference, participants reported that the Government has so far issued 28 decrees on the delegation of responsibilities and powers between the central Government and two-tier local administrations. Several localities have already piloted the new governance model.

The UN Secretary-General praised Vietnam’s remarkable achievements in socio-economic development and international integration in recent years, noting that the country has emerged as a model in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting international peace and security, and engaging in key UN processes.
Nghia affirmed that this is a milestone of special significance, affirming and honouring the the Vietnamese revolutionary press’s glorious tradition of 100 years of serving the revolutionary cause of the Party, serving the Fatherland, and serving the people.
