More quake hits Indonesia’s Lombok island

A new earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale, shook the Indonesian island of Lombok on August 1 morning, according to the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia.

Jakarta (VNA) - A new earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 3.3 on theRichter scale, shook the Indonesianisland of Lombok on August 1 morning, according to the Meteorological, Climatologicaland Geophysical Agency of Indonesia.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in WestLombok district, with a depth of 11km. No casualty caused by the earthquake hasbeen reported so far.

Just three days earlier, a 6.4-magtinute quake struckthe island on July 29, about 100km west of Bali, leaving 17 people dead and 300other injured, and damaging thousands of houses and buildings in West Lombok.

Local officials have declared a state ofemergency that will last until August 2.

Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands ofislands, sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.

It is frequently hit by quakes, most of themharmless. However, the region remains acutely alert to tremors that mighttrigger tsunamis.

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 inIndonesia.-VNA
