Most countries recognise Vietnam’s new passport: official

Hanoi (VNA) - The new version of Vietnam’s passporthas complied with regulations and been recognised by most countries in the world,Spokesman of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Lt. Gen. To An Xo said onAugust 3.
He made the remark while replying to the media’s questionabout the embassies of the Germany, Spain, and the Czech Republic recently announcingthe temporary suspension of granting visas on the new passport of Vietnam.
Speaking at the Government’s regular press briefing, theChief of the MPS Office noted the new passport has complied with regulations inthe 2019 Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and also met conditionsand standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
Many countries such as Japan, the Republic of Korea,Switzerland, and Mongolia also do not have the “place of birth” in theirpassports, he went on.
“Most ofcountries in the world still recognise the new version of the Vietnamesepassport. Only three - Germany, Spain, and the Czech Republic - temporarily haven’trecognised it due to some technical factors,” he emphasised.
To create favourable conditions for Vietnamese citizens towork, study, and travel abroad, the MPS and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs areworking with partners of Germany, Spain, and the Czech Republic to deal with thetechnical issues, which Xo said will be handled “very early”.
He went on to say that the short-term solution is that theMPS will add the place of birth in the passport’s appendix. If necessary,holders of the new passport version can come to the MPS’s ImmigrationDepartment or Vietnam’s overseas representative agencies to add their places ofbirth in the appendix.
The MPS will coordinate with other ministries andsectors to consider relevant legal regulations to supplement the place of birthin the new passport version, according to the official./.
The Embassy of Vietnam in Germany on July 29 announced that it is ready to issue a confirmation in German about the place of birth for Vietnamese citizens using new-style passports, in case they need it to present to German authorities.
The Spanish Embassy in Vietnam on August 1 announced that it cannot accept Schengen visa applications from Vietnamese citizens using new-style passports until further notice.
The Vietnamese Embassy in the Czech Republic on August 2 announced it will issue new passports with an annotation on the holders’ place of birth added inside.
The United Kingdom will continue to recognise all passports issued by Vietnam despite some countries in the European Union rejecting the latest version due to missing place-of-birth information.
