Hanoi (VNA) – Nearly 150,000 people in Myanmar have forced to fleedue to floods caused by heavy downpours in the Mekong River region thatthreatens dike breach.

Myanmar media reported that nearly 150,000 people have been forced to seekrefuge in 327 camps while nearly 28,000 are clinging on in their flooded homes.Up to 12 people was killed in the floods.

Evacuation orders are still in place across Bago, Karen, Mon and Taninthariprovinces with dozens of dams and reservoirs overflowing.

Myanmar is just entering peak monsoon season and more downpours are expected inthe coming weeks.

Myanmar is hit by severe flooding every year and climate scientists in 2015ranked it top of a global list of nations hardest hit by extreme weather.

That year more than 100 people died in floods that also displaced hundreds ofthousands across the country.-VNA
