Myanmar earns 1.11 billion USD from rice exports

Myanmar has earned more than 1.11 billion USD from rice and broken rice exports in the fiscal year 2017-2018, the Myanmar Rice Federation said on April 7.

Hanoi (VNA) -Myanmar has earned more than 1.11 billion USD from rice and broken rice exportsin the fiscal year 2017-2018, the Myanmar Rice Federation said on April 7.

From April 1, 2017 toMarch 23, 2018, Myanmar shipped a total of 2.89 million tonnes of rice and620,696 tonnes of broken rice to foreign countries via border gates and searoutes.

In the past consecutiveyears, the country exported high volumes of rice - 1.8 million tonnes in FY2014-15, 1.4 million tonnes in FY 2015-16 and 1.7 million tonnes in FY 2016-17.

About 60 percent of Myanmar'srice exports went to neighbouring China, mainly through border gates, whiledemand for the country's rice also comes from Asian countries, EU member statesand some African nations.

According to the Ministryof Commerce, Myanmar earned 2.93 billion USD from agricultural products as ofMarch 23 in FY 2017-18.

Apart from rice, thecountry is trying to promote other export products, including peas and pulses, aquaticproducts, textiles, timber and forest products, rubber and tourism to narrowits trade deficit.-VNA
