Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman met his Myanmar counterpart UWunna Maung Lwin in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw on May 21 todiscuss solutions to the illegal migration wave at sea, according toBernama news agency.
The Malaysian Foreign Minister was quotedby Bernama as saying that Minister U Wunna told him Myanmar iswilling to cooperate fully with Malaysia as the current ASEAN chair,to resolve the crisis.
For his part, Anifah said he had soughtassurance from the Myanmar government that it would help to tacklethe issue, stressing Myanmar ’s role in identifying the root of theproblem and solving it.
On the same day, the MyanmarPresident U Thein Sein discussed the same issue with the US DeputySecretary of State, Antony Blinken, who was paying a working visit toNay Pyi Taw, according to Malaysian Minister of Information U Ye Htut.
Blinken said the US will deliver humanitarian aid to themigrants at sea. He also stressed that Myanmar should deal with theproblem at its root.
Myanmar officials said the countrywill aid those who are their citizens and repatriate them. A governmentdelegation will attend a meeting on the crisis in the Thai capital ofBangkok on May 29 with the expected participation of 18 countries andthree organisations.
Those meetings took place as thousandsof Bangladeshis and Rohingya ethnics from Myanmar remain stranded atsea in unsafe vessels with the intention of landing in Indonesia ,Malaysia and Thailand.
On May 20, the foreign ministersof Malaysia , Indonesia and Thailand agreed on temporary solutionsto deal with the wave of migrants reaching their shores at a meeting inMalaysia.
They called on the Association of Southeast AsianNations (ASEAN) to play an active role in dealing with the problempromptly and effectively.-VNA
