Myanmar President reaffirms commitment to peace, development

Myanmar President U Thein Sein reaffirmed the government's commitment to achieving peace, promoting economic development and building a better future for the next generation on November 5.
Myanmar President U Thein Sein reaffirmed the government's commitment toachieving peace, promoting economic development and building a betterfuture for the next generation on November 5.

In a monthly speechto the nation, he said the five-party roundtable talks, includingrepresentatives of the government, parliament, political parties, armyand the election commission, were held for the first time on October 31.

Duringthe talks, the President proposed three main agendas, includingcontinuation of democratic transition and political process, ways tostrengthen the peace process for national reconciliation, and ways tohold the 2015 election.

The participants discussed solutions forpolitical issues through political means, constitutional amendment,trust building among the groups for reform process, the signing of anationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) at the end of 2014 or in early2015, the framework for further political dialogue before the 2015election, and how to hold the vote in a free and fair manner amongothers.

The President said that with a nationwide ceasefireagreement (NCA) signed, a code of conduct can be established that willhave to be followed by both sides, thus helping lower the number ofclashes and reduce hostilities.

He believed that success achievedin the peace process can be a basis for national reconciliation and the2015 general election as well which is critical for democratictransition.-VNA
