Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Secretary General Nguyen Hanh Phuc has declared that the election of deputies to the 14th NA and People’s Cಌouncils at all levels for 2016-2021 has been a success with a 99.35 percent turnout.
He made the statement on June 9 in reply to reporters’ queries about the results of the general election.
Regarding the re-election in the southern province of Kien Giang on June 5, Phuc, who is also head of the NA Office, said the collection of ballots to cast on behalf of others is a violation of the law, and those who committed this misdeed will face discipline in line with the Criminal Code.
About the shortage of elected deputies to the People’s Councils at all levels, Phuc said it is normal and does not impact their operations.
During the upcoming tenure, the provincial People’s Councils lack 8 out of 4,000 deputies. The respective figures for the district and communal level People’s Councils are 120 out of 25,179 and 26 out of 291,173, he said, adding that these numbers are small.
For localities lacking two-thirds of elected officials, the National Election Council decided to hold additional votings.
After the list of new lawmakers is announced, the National Election Council will acquire letters of complaint within five days and consider them within one month, ensuring that all of the qualified legislators could attend the first meeting of the NA, he said.
On the occasion, Phuc also hailed the National Election Council for its effective and professional support for the general election.-VNA
