National Women’s Congress talks gender equality in external relations
Vietnamese women have full positions and potential to play an active part in the country’s reform, heard a working session of the 13th National Women’s Congress on March 10.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese women have fullpositions and potential to play an active part in the country’s reform, heard aworking session of the 13th National Women’s Congress on March 10.
Le Thi Thu Hang, Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry and Assistant tothe Foreign Minister, said over the past years, gender equality andwomen’s empowerment have been among priorities in Vietnam’s external affairs.
Vietnam’s active, proactive and leading role inmatters regarding gender equality and women’s rights at multilateral regional andinternational forums has been acknowledged by international friends, she added.
She said Vietnam is one of the first countries tocomplete the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on gender equality andimproving women’s position, and the country is making efforts to implement the 2030Agenda on Sustainable Development that also includes goals of gender equalityand the empowerment of women and girls.
Hang emphasised Vietnam’s efforts to promote women’srole at the United Nations Security Council, saying the country has sent femaleofficers to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and the Central AfricanRepublic, who make up 16 percent of Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces, higher thanthe rate recommended by the UN.

In bilateral ties, gender equality and women’s empowermenthave been integrated into foreign affairs at different levels, she said.
To carry forward achievements in this regard, shesuggested the Foreign Ministry promote the key role of the Vietnam Women’sUnion, saying the union should work to enable women to make more contributionsto building the great national unity bloc and socio-economic-culturaldevelopment.
Le Khanh Luong, Acting Director General of the Departmentof Gender Equality at the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, saidgender matters have been integrated into the building and implementation of theNational Target Programme on Sustainable Poverty Reduction for 2016-2020.
According to Luong, the 2014 amended Law onInsurance has also paid more heed to gender equality with provisions on takingleave on maternity allowance for childbirth or child adoption. Notably, the legaldocument has for the first time prescribed that husbands can take a maternityleave.
He commended the active role of the Vietnam Women’sUnion in the building and enforcement of social welfare policies./.
Caring for and protecting legitimate rights of women, both in family and society, is the consistent policy of the Vietnamese Party and State since the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Women is the group that is hard hit by natural disasters and an important factor in natural disaster prevention and control, according to Nguyen Van Tien, Deputy General Director of the Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
