New aid package targets flood-hit poor, near-poor families

Hanoi (VNA) – The aid package of nearly1 million USD committed by the Government of the Republic of Korea (RoK) inearly November will be used to assist poor and near-poor Vietnamese familiesaffected by typhoon Damrey to rebuild their houses.
The UN Development Programme (UNDP) andthe RoK Embassy in Vietnam and the General Department of Disaster Preventionand Control under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Developmentsigned an agreement on the implementation of the aid package in Hanoi onDecember 12.
With the donation, which is channeled via the UNDP, the flood-hit families willbe supported in terms of knowledge and necessary resources to repair theirhouses, making them resistant to upcoming storms and floods.
UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Kamal Malhotra said ensuring residents’access to safe housing is the core of the rehabilitation work.
Tran Quang Hoai, permanent member of the Central Steering Committee for NaturalDisaster Prevention and Control, praised the timely support of the RoKGovernment.
RoK Ambassador to Vietnam Lee Hyuk said apart from friendship activities and economicties, Vietnam and the RoK have supported each other in difficult times,promising that the RoK will continue to stand side by side with Vietnam toovercome challenges caused by climate change.
The project will be jointly carried out by the Vietnam Red Cross and theVietnam Women’s Union, targeting poor and near-poor families and needy people.
Damrey, also the 12th storm developed in the East Sea, hit Vietnamon November 4, affecting more than 4.3 million people and damaging more than303,500 houses. -VNA
