Hanoi (VNA) - The number of patents hasincreased by 56.7 percent in the first five months of this year compared to thesame period last year.
Dinh Huu Phi, Director-General of the National Office ofIntellectual Property of Vietnam, revealed the number at a recent workingsession with Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh on solutions toimprove intellectual property work.
The office has carried out many activities to makeintellectual property a tool for socio-economic development.
It issued nine certificates for geographical indicationregistration and 280 certificates for registration of collective marks andmarks of local typical products last year.
The office has also deployed a project to build thenational geographical indication (GI) logo, coordinated in building andmanaging GI between the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry andTrade and participated in the National Brand Programme and others fornational and local key products.
In international relations, the office has participated ininternational cooperation forums and organisations such as APEC, ASEAN, WTO andthe World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and negotiated IP contentin international trade agreements including the CPTPP and EVFTA.
Speaking at the meeting, Anh said he appreciated theefforts and success of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.
The minister asked the office and related agencies to developa plan to enforce the amended IP Law and the IP Strategy to achieve set goals,and study measures to shorten the time to process IP registrations./.
Amid increasingly sophisticated and complex intellectual property (IP) violations, Vietnamese businesses remained slow to register their products and protect their rights, said experts.
Counterfeiting and violations of intellectual property rights (IPR) were still rampant, with the perpetrators operating outside and within the country employing advanced technologies and running sophisticated schemes, Hoang Anh Duong, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Directorate of Market Surveillance, said at a forum in Hanoi on November 26.
