Manila (VNA) – Philippine PresidentRodrigo Duterte announced on May 24 that martial law in the southern region ofMindanao could be extended for one year. 

"If it would take a year to do it, if it'sover within a month, then I'd be happy," Duterte said in a video postedonline by the government.

Earlier, on May 23, during his visit to Russia,the President declared martial law for 60 days in the southernmost island ofMindanao after clashes between the Philippine army and the Islamic Stategroup-linked militants in Marawi city.

According to the local media, at least onepolice was killed when security forces raided a house where they believedIsnilon Hapilon, a leader of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group, was hiding inMarawi city.-VNA
