Hanoi (VNA) –Philippine authorities said on October 18 that the African swine fever (ASF)virus has spread to two more provinces in the country.

Infection cases were detected insome areas in Cavite province, south of the capital city of Manila, and inNueva Ecija on Luzon island.

Cavite Governor Jonvic Remullaconfirmed the cases in two villages which have been quarantined to contain thedisease.

Meanwhile, Secretary of AgricultureWilliam Dar also confirmed the infection cases in Nueva Ecija, but said theywere "limited".

The disease, which can be spreadvia fomites and in uncooked pig products, is wreaking havoc on livestockindustries in China and Southeast Asia. However, it does not affect humans.

The Philippines - the world's 10th biggest pork consumer - has further tightened its animal quarantine rules toprotect its 5 billion USD hog industry, after declaring its first outbreak on September9 and reporting several more cases since then.

The country has to date culled morethan 30,000 pigs in ASF-hit areas./.
