Phu Quoc moves towards smart city status

The first phase of a project to build a digital network infrastructure that will help Phu Quoc Island become a smart city has been completed, the VNPT has announced.

Kien Giang (VNA) - The first phase of a project tobuild a digital network infrastructure that will help Phu Quoc Island become asmart city has been completed, the Vietnam Post and TelecommunicationsCorporation (VNPT) has announced.

VNPT General Director PhamDuc Long said the corporation has completed a project upgrading e-governmentsoftware, installing cameras at designated points to manage security.

It has also finishedinstalling wireless broadcasting equipment in tourist sites under the SmartWifi project, deploying accommodation management software for hotels and guesthouses.

Thee-government system has linked administrations from the commune to theprovincial level, helping people and enterprises in the district complete administrativeprocedures online to get licences or register their businesses.

"Soon,each resident have a unique electronic account to deal with governments at alllevels," Long said.

Four airmonitoring stations and one water source observation station have been deployedin the island district. The environment monitoring system will collect,process, analyse and deliver real-time data to alert users on air and watercontamination, and provide recommendations on how to respond.

The VNPTalso has built a safe city solution with many mobile applications that willhelp people report incidents (accidents, theft, acts of violating urbansecurity) to management agencies and also help the latter respond quickly.

To manageand operate the above-mentioned systems, Phu Quoc has built a centralisedoperation centre tasked with receiving complaints from citizens, visitors andorganisations; improving traffic safety, co-ordinating emergency responses andperforming other important functions.

“I amconfident that the operation of centralised centre will make an importantcontribution to enhancing the district’s management efficiency as well as thequality of service provided to people and businesses. This, in turn, willcontribute to delivering convenience, comfort and safety to visitors who cometo Phu Quoc,” Long said.

ApplaudingVNPT’s efforts in helping building a smart city, Mai Văn Huynh, Vice Chairmanof the Kien Giang People’s Committee, called for concerted efforts to ensurethat the project is completed in time.

Thecorporation has announced that in the project’s second phase, it wouldimplement highly sophisticated platform systems like the Internet of Things.

The 67 billion VND (2.9million USD) project to make Phu Quoc a smart city by 2020 was approved by the provinceKien Giang People’s Committee in April this year.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’slargest island, covering an area of nearly 600 square kilometers with a population ofover 100,000 people.-VNA
