Phu Tho (VNA) – The northernmidland province of Phu Tho is striving to reduce the percentage of poorhouseholds to 5 percent by 2020, as part of its efforts to achieve sustainablepoverty reduction and improve living conditions of local people.
According to the provincialDepartment of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the province now has about 41,000poor families and over 31,000 near-poor households, accounting for 10.51percent and 8 percent of the total number, respectively.
Of these households, 33 percent arefrom ethnic minority groups and 23 percent have at least one welfarebeneficiary.
Phu Tho plans to invest more than 1trillion VND (44 million USD), including 925 billion VND sourced from the statebudget and 76 billion VND from the provincial funds, to carry out povertyreduction projects.
The money will be spent on developinglocal infrastructure, supporting production, diversifying rural livelihoods,and scaling up successful models of poverty reduction in disadvantagedcommunes.
To effectively implement the nationaltarget programme on sustainable poverty alleviation, the department has workedwith State agencies and district administrations to update the status of thepoor and underprivileged areas in order to better support them, said Directorof the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Bui Duc Nhan.
It has worked to raise people’sawareness of poverty reduction and encourage them to be more independent andovercome difficulties, Nhan said, adding that it has also called on localorganisations, businesses and individuals to join the efforts.-VNA

It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
