PM attends inauguration ceremony of irrigation system in Kien Giang

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 5 attended the inauguration ceremony of the first phase of the Cai Lon-Cai Be irrigation project in Chau Thanh district, the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

Kien Giang (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 5 attended the inauguration ceremonyof the first phase of the Cai Lon-Cai Be irrigation project in Chau Thanhdistrict, the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.

Regarded as thebiggest of its kind in Vietnam, the irrigation system is intended to controlsalinity in the five provinces of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Hau Giang andKien Giang, helping to save billions of VND for the State budget. Itwill also serve as an agricultural highlight in the western region.

The construction ofthe first phase began in November 2019 with total investment capital of over3.3 trillion VND (144.48 million USD).

Once fullyoperational, the system is expected to facilitate stable and sustainableproduction on an area of 384,120 hectares, including nearly 347 hectares of agricultureand fishery.

This is one of the major projects rolled out in line withthe Government’s Resolution No. 120, PM Chinh stressed, adding that the system andwestern sea dykes will help to control natural disasters, rising sea level andflooding.

It will also give a facelift to rural areas, accelerate sustainableagricultural restructuring in the Mekong Delta in general and localitiesincluded in the project in particular, contributing to reducing poverty andraising local people's living standards.

The PM asked local authorities and people to join handswith the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in the use of the system,which, he said, would be utilised in tourism.

PM Chinh also expressed his belief that with projects like theCai Lon-Cai Be irrigation system, the Mekong Delta will enter a new developmentperiod with breakthroughs, and develops rapidly and sustainably./.
