PM concludes trip to APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his entourage arrived in Hanoi on late November 18, concluding his trip to Papua New Guinea to attend the 26th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Hanoi (VNA) –Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his entourage arrived in Hanoi on late November18, concluding his trip to Papua New Guinea to attend the 26th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting. 

From November 17-18, the PM attended and joineddiscussions at numerous closed-door meetings, working luncheons with APECleaders, and dialogues with the International Monetary Fund, leaders of 14 Pacificisland states, the APEC Business Advisory Council. He also held bilateralmeetings with the PMs of New Zealand, Vanuatu, Thailand, the head of the HongKong (China) Special Administrative Region, and representatives from theUS-APEC Business Alliance, including several major US firms investing inVietnam. 

At the meetings, the Vietnamese PM made strongcalls for promoting trade liberalisation and investment, supporting the WorldTrade Organisation, economic connectivity, sustainable and inclusive development,and switch to digital economy. 

He called on APEC to play a vanguard role andfoster innovative initiatives, turning Asia-Pacific into a global technologicalhub. 

APEC needs to create new driving forces forgrowth, trade, investment, connectivity and inclusive development, he said, stressingthat only by so doing can APEC affirm its position as the leading economicforum in the region.

As the top regional economic connectivitymechanism, APEC needs to actively promote existing cooperation mechanisms suchas the ASEAN Economic Community, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreementfor Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Regional Comprehensive EconomicPartnership (RCEP), towards forming a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific(FTAAP), he said.

The PM proposed stronger and more effectivecooperation to strengthen structural reform to narrow development gap amongAPEC economies, effectively implement the initiatives “APEC Cross-BorderE-Commerce Facilitation Framework”, “APEC Internet and Digital Economy Roadmap”and “Digital Economy Action Plan”, invest in digital infrastructure, improve theorganisation and governance skills in both public and private sectors, andoffer mutual support for digital economic growth. 

During a dialogue with ABAC corporaterepresentatives, PM Phuc informed that the Vietnamese legislature approved theCPTPP on November 12, 2018, which demonstrated the country’s determination tocontinue with comprehensive reform, active and proactive integration into theworld, and support open, free and rule-based trade and investment up to highstandards. 

ABAC members congratulated Vietnam on its CPTPPratification, affirming that it is a great opportunity to attract more foreigninvestors to the country. 

The PM’s attendance at the 26th APECLeaders’ Meeting on the occasion of the 20th anniversary ofVietnam’s membership in APEC has improved Vietnam’s stature in the forum,affirming its active efforts and high sense of responsibility for shapingregional economic linkage, contributing to fostering the joint vision on anAsia-Pacific Economic Community of peace, stability and prosperity.-VNA
