🐻Bac Giang police have admitted to shortcomingsthat led to an incorrect sentence being handed to Nguyen Thanh Chan for amurder committed 10 years ago.

ꦚAt a press briefing on December 4, DeputyDirector of Bac Giang Police Tran Dinh Hong said he is sorry that there wereshortcomings during the investigation and subjective reasons leading to thewrong sentence being handed down in the case.

🐎Chan,52, in the northern province of Bac Giang, was sentenced to life in jail in2004 for killing a woman. He was then set free on November 4, 2013 after thereal murderer, Ly Nguyen Chung, confessed to police in October.

꧂Hongsaid provincial authorities asked police officials, who had directly joined inhandling the murder case, to prepare a detailed report and take responsibilityfor this case.

𓂃However, the level of wrongdoings and responsibility for other individualsis still being investigated by a higher-level agency before final decisionsabout their responsibility are announced, he said.

💝ViceChairman of the provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Van Linh, said anyonefound to have committed faults in this case must take responsibility before thelaw.

Provincial authorities visited and helped create favourable conditionsfor Chan and his family to overcome difficulties, especially traumas, caused bythe incorrect sentence.

൩President Truong Tan Sang had asked concerned agencies to compensateChan, who spent 10 years in jail, for a crime he apparently did notcommit.

𒅌According to the case file, during his 10 years in prison, Chan sentnumerous letters to jailers, saying that he had not killed the woman in thenight of August 15, 2003.

Healleged that the killer was, in fact, Chung.

𓄧On July5, 2013, Chan's wife also sent a letter to the Investigation Department of theSupreme People's Procuracy, reiterating these claims.

Afterreceiving the letter, investigators conducted an intensive investigation ofChung, prompting him to flee.

🍎OnOctober 25, 2013, Chung gave himself up and admitted his crime.-VNA
