Hanoi (VNA) – President Tran Dai Quang met 112 chiefs of villages andcommunes, artisans and prestigious people from ethnic minority groups in 15northern mountainous provinces at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on April 20,part of activities to celebrate Cultural Day of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups (April19).

Speaking atthe event, the President affirmed that since its establishment, the Party hasplaced importance on ethnic affairs and solidarity of ethnic groups, especiallythe preservation and upholding of ethnic groups’ traditional cultural values.

The leaderlauded the efforts of ethnic chiefs of villages, artisans and prestigiouspeople in the north in the national construction and defence cause, includingethnic cultural affairs, saying that they have made important contributions toimproving the lives of ethnic minorities.

He hailedthe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) for working withministries, agencies and localities to hold a conference gathering chiefs ofvillages, artisans and prestigious people from ethnic minority and border regionsand a seminar discussing preserving ethnic cultural identities.

As theethnic minorities still live in need, they are easily incited by hostile forceswhich seek to divide them and sabotage national unity, causing politicalinstability, he said, adding that this requires the MoCST, ministries, agenciesand localities to continue implementing the Party and State’s resolutions anddecrees on ethnic affairs and policies, with a focus on the resolution adoptedby the 12th National Party Congress and the 12th PartyCentral Committee’s resolution on developing Vietnamese culture and people fornational sustainable development.

The leaderrequested improving the quality of cultural activities in tandem withsocio-economic development, ensuring national defence-security, and new ruralconstruction while involving the entire political system and people in preservingtraditional cultural values.

He alsounderscored the importance of issuing policies to instruct village chiefs,artisans and prestigious people how to execute the Party and State’s ethnicpolicies.

The hosttook the occasion to ask them to carry out their role in mass mobilisation to implementthe Party’s guidelines and policies and enforce laws on ethnic affairs andculture.

Over thepast years, the MoCST has proposed practical measures and coordinated withministries, agencies and localities to hold regional cultural exchanges, contributingto honouring cultural values of ethnic groups and strengthening national unity.-VNA
