President Truong Tan Sang on May 6 visited and presented gifts toseveral families of war veterans and wounded soldiers in Dien Bien Phucity, the northwest province of Dien Bien, who participated in the DienBien Phu campaign 60 years ago.
During the meeting withveterans, President Sang underlined that the Party and State eternallyremember the great contributions by war veterans and ex-youthvolunteers to the victory of the campaign, which helped end the Frenchcolonial rule in Vietnam.
He expressed his hope that they will continue popularising the revolutionary tradition for the sake of posterity.
ThePresident also stressed that the State and people shall pay moreattention to improving living conditions of families of fallen warheroes and wounded soldiers.
The same day, a wide range ofactivities were held across the country to celebrate the 60 thanniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.
A get-together wasorganised in Ho Chi Minh City to recall memories of the campaign, withthe participation of veterans and youths.
Meanwhile, the HighCommand of Military Zone 7 also held a similar ceremony, bringingtogether nearly 200 ex-soldiers that fought in the campaign, along withyoung officers.
Lieutenant General Pham Van Dy, the Zone’sPolitical Commissar, expressed deep gratitude to war heroes who laiddown their lives for national independence and freedom. He said that thezone will make every effort to complete all tasks, thus contributing tothe national construction and defence.
Also on May 6, theVietnam-Laos Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City hosted aconference highlighting the fighting alliance and solidarity betweenVietnam and Laos in the Dien Bien Phu campaign and the 1953-1954Winter-Spring Campaign.
Participants underlined the importanceof the Dien Bien Phu triumph for the two countries as well as oppressednations worldwide.
They also said the two countries shouldcontinue further promoting the special friendship and comprehensivecooperation in the coming time.-VNA
