Hanoi: Prisoners granted clemency on Tet
Hanoi granted amnesty to 305 inmates, ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, the largest holiday of the country.
Clemency was granted to 416 inmates at Dong Son Prison in central QuangBinh province on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of nationalreunification.
Thirty-three prisoners have beenfreed ahead of their release date, while 383 others will have theirimprisonment reduced by 1-15 months.
Colonel HoangQuoc Tri, a warden at the prison, said the prisoners were pardoned forgood behaviour and rehabilitation, adding that those freed receivedtransport expenses so as to swiftly reunite with their relatives.
Earlier this year, 558 prisoners at Dong Son jail also benefited fromsentence reductions ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.-VNA
