Quang Binh (VNA) – The Border Guard Command of the central province of Quang Binh has worked hard to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, heard a conference on March 4 to review the work in 2024 and outlined plans for the mission in 2025.

Colonel Trinh Thanh Binh, Commander of the Quang Binh Border Guard Command, emphasised that in the coming period, the unit will enhance cooperation with relevant forces and local authorities in coastal areas to handle fishing vessels violating IUU regulations.

Additionally, the unit will conduct assessments to review experience, adjust policies and measures to further improve the work to combat IUU fishing and protecting Vietnam's sea sovereignty.

The Quang Binh Border Guard Command has tasked Party members that work in border defence posts with raising awareness among fishery businesses, vessel owners, and captains on IUU prevention and control, while controlling the movements of all fishing vessels as they enter or exit rivers and fish ports. The authorities will strictly refuse to allow any vessels to voyage out on fishing trips if they do not meet legal paperwork and equipment requirements, Binh stated.

Besides, the command will work closely with local authorities and relevant agencies to review, track, and manage fishing vessels that either fail to complete required paperwork, lack vessel monitoring systems (VMS), or have been disconnected for over six months. The authorities will also monitor vessels deemed to have a high risk of violating IUU regulations. Public awareness campaigns will continue to inform and ensure fishermen comply with IUU regulations.

Quang Binh has a coastline stretching over 116 kilometres and is home to more than 7,000 fishing vessels, employing over 20,000 workers directly. In 2024, the Quang Binh Border Guard Command conducted 55 awareness-raising sessions, reaching 3,087 individuals, distributed over 4,000 leaflets, and collaborated with local media outlets to broadcast 20 bulletins.

♏ These efforts successfully encouraged 7,500 vessel owners and fishermen to pledge to refrain from violating IUU regulations. The border guard force also led and coordinated with authorities to seize and deal with 52 cases, involving 53 individuals, confiscating nearly 100 kilograms of explosives, over 100 metres of slow-burning fuse, and 154 detonators./.
